FAFSA On
The Web
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid
(FAFSA) can easily be found at
www.fafsa.ed.gov. The Web saves you processing time - in
some cases it cuts your time in half! It also increases the
accuracy and completeness of your application due to the
automatic error checks performed by the system. FAFSA on the
Web is secure. You can feel comfortable submitting your
financial information via the Internet.
When completing the
FAFSA on the Web, keep in mind the following:
- FAFSA on the Web offers the ability to
print out worksheets and other items to help you organize
your materials and easily apply for financial aid.
- Use your U.S. Department of Education PIN
number to electronically sign your FAFSA on the Web. If you
do not recall your U.S. Department of Education PIN number,
wish to change it or need to register for one, simply go to
www.pin.ed.gov.
- One parent (for students who are required
to submit parental information) should also register for a
U.S. Department of Education PIN number. Because it is a
personal identification number, the parent can use this same
U.S. Department of Education PIN number for their electronic
signature each year and for each child with whom they are
applying.
- If you do not have a U.S. Department of
Education PIN number, you must print and mail a signature
page with your signature (and your parent's signature, if
you were required to submit parental data) as soon as you
electronically submit your data. The signature sheet
provides a mailing address.
- If a signature page is not received within
2 weeks, you will be sent a rejected Student Aid Report
(SAR) that will need to be signed and mailed to the federal
processor. Your FAFSA application will not be processed
until this is done.
PIN Numbers
Students and parents can use their U.S.
Department of Education personal identification number (PIN)
to electronically sign their FAFSA. The student's PIN will
also access other U.S. Department of Education resources via
the Internet. You can request a PIN or change your PIN at
www.pin.ed.gov
Renewal FAFSA on the Web
Students who filed a FAFSA last year can use
their U.S. Department of Education PIN number to file the
Renewal FAFSA on the Web at
www.fafsa.ed.gov. Because many of the basic data elements
of the FAFSA do not change (name, date of birth, etc.), the
Renewal FAFSA on the Web will ask you to confirm last year's
information and provide updated information for elements such
as grade level and the income sections.
Corrections on the Web
After your FAFSA is submitted and you receive
a Student Aid Report (SAR), you may need to make corrections
to data elements. If so, you can use your PIN at
www.fafsa.ed.gov
to access and change information. You should not attempt to
correct student Social Security numbers via the web or on the
paper SAR. Anytime the student Social Security number is
incorrect, a new FAFSA (paper or via the web) must be
submitted.
